KUJTEN Cashmere: How to recognize quality

Buying Cashmere Without Being Fooled

Cashmere is one of the few materials where price tells you little about quality. Two sweaters can look identical – and one will look like a cleaning rag after three months, while the other will still be perfect after five years. At ABOUT.ALEXA, we carry KUJTEN, a French cashmere brand that uses Mongolian raw material.

In this guide, you will learn:

  • How to objectively identify good cashmere quality
  • Why some sweaters pill and others don't
  • Which KUJTEN model suits which occasion
  • What "Bico" means at KUJTEN
  • Whether the investment is worthwhile

Brief Summary: The crucial factors are fiber length and fineness – not the ply count on the label. Long, fine fibers pill less and retain their shape.

What is KUJTEN? The Brand Briefly Explained

KUJTEN is a French cashmere brand, named after the highest peak in Mongolia – the country of origin of its raw material. You can find the complete brand history on our KUJTEN collection page. This section addresses a more fundamental question: What makes cashmere good?

How to Recognize Good Cashmere?

Three key metrics determine quality – and only two of them are ever on a label:

  • Fiber length. Long fibers can be twisted more tightly and are less likely to slip out of the yarn. This slipping is precisely what pilling is. Short fibers are cheaper and the most common reason why a sweater gives up after one season.
  • Fineness (Micron). The thinner the individual fiber, the softer the knit feels. Fine cashmere does not scratch – a scratching cashmere sweater is a bad sign, not a break-in effect.
  • Ply count (2-ply, 4-ply). This indicates how many yarns have been twisted together – meaning how thick the knit is, not how good. A 2-ply sweater made from long fibers beats a 4-ply one made from short fibers.

The practical test in the store: stroke the surface and press lightly. Good cashmere springs back and feels dry-soft, not fluffy-roughened. A heavily roughened feel often conceals short fibers.

Which KUJTEN Model Suits Whom?

Model Character Pairs well with
Mela the classic crewneck sweater Basic in Noir, Espresso or Marine – the entry point
Mela Sunny brighter, warmer color palette Milano Blush, Italian Gold – when color is the statement
Mela Bandana crewneck with bandana detail plain trousers, no other jewelry needed
Lita V-neck layering over a shirt or blouse
Jessy calm cut, melange tones office, under a blazer
Melah Leopard print variation the rest of the outfit remains monochrome
Hachiko / Scarfy neck scarf and scarf entry to the brand, wearable year-round

What Does "Bico" Mean at KUJTEN?

The Bico models are designed in two colors – recognizable by the color descriptions: Noir Blanc, Anthra Noir, BDX Milano each name two tones. Practically, this means a Bico piece brings its own contrast and therefore requires less styling around it.

How Do I Properly Care for Cashmere?

In short: hand wash or on a wool program at 30 degrees, dry flat, store folded – never on a hanger, as this will stretch out the shoulders. Detailed care instructions can be found on our Cashmere Collection page.

Is KUJTEN an Investment Brand?

For cashmere, KUJTEN is in the mid-price segment – significantly above fast fashion, significantly below the big luxury houses. The value lies in the cost per wear: A good crewneck sweater in Noir or Espresso will become the most worn item in your wardrobe for years. The print and color variations are additions, not the foundation. If you're building a collection, start with solid colors.

The ABOUT.ALEXA Styling Experts Recommend:

  • Mela in Espresso with jeans and flat shoes – the simplest good winter outfit.
  • Lita with a V-neck over a white shirt, collar visible.
  • Hachiko neck scarf with a simple coat, when an accent is needed.
  • Melah Leopard with plain trousers in brown or black – one print is enough.

Why KUJTEN is a Perfect Fit for ABOUT.ALEXA

Cashmere is the material where personal advice is most beneficial – because quality can be felt and is difficult to describe. You can find the current selection in our KUJTEN collection and in the entire Cashmere collection. At Brauhausstraße 3–5 in Dortmund, you can compare them side-by-side – upon request with a personal styling appointment.
